What CodexUsage.dev measures, what it does not, and how to change your analytics choice.
You can review, grant, or revoke optional Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity consent at any time.
Local Tool & CLI Companion
The Codex Usage downloadable utilities (including the native macOS menu bar companion, the terminal CLI, and the local browser dashboard) run entirely on your local machine.
- No telemetry: The local tool sends no usage telemetry, tokens, prompts, code snippets, or analytics back to Codex Usage or third parties.
- In-memory data: Quota calculations and session pace measurements are held in volatile memory only and are discarded when the application exits.
- Direct client communication: The companion communicates solely with your locally authenticated OpenAI Codex CLI session.
QuotaLint (Optional Check)
QuotaLint is a separate, optional check, available on this website, as a standalone macOS app, and in the Codex Usage menu bar app. It is not part of the local Codex Usage monitoring described above, and it is not local: running a check sends data to a third-party judgment service (TypeSafe) from our server so the assessment can be returned.
- Nothing is sent unless you run a check: Visiting the QuotaLint page sends nothing, and neither does reading your quota — the QuotaLint app and the menu bar app both read it locally on your machine. Data leaves only when you click “Check task”.
- What is sent: Only the task description you typed and coarse quota values (remaining percentages and time until reset) — the ones you enter here, or the ones the Mac app read locally.
- What is never sent: Repository names or contents, file paths, your Codex conversation history, earlier prompts, credentials, account identifiers, or diagnostics.
- No task history: We do not log the task text, and QuotaLint keeps no saved history of your checks. Protected Run in the Mac app rereads your quota locally and sends nothing. When a run ends, the app can keep a small outcome record on your Mac only (task size, lint codes, quota bands, duration and how it ended), never the task text, and never sent anywhere.
Website Analytics
On this website (codexusage.dev), we use three distinct analytics implementations to monitor site health and understand user interest.
We use an instance of Umami (cloud.umami.is) for privacy-focused, cookie-free aggregate website metrics. Umami does not collect personal identifiers, does not track individual visitors across sites, and does not use cookies. It provides high-level page visit counts and basic aggregate referral sources.
We use Google Analytics (measurement ID G-P3NPYWWVVS), a web analytics service provided by Google LLC (“Google”), to measure acquisition channels, site navigation, and conversion activity (such as documentation link clicks, command copying, and companion downloads).
Microsoft Clarity is a behavioral analytics service provided by Microsoft. We use it to understand how visitors use CodexUsage.dev through behavioral metrics, heatmaps, and session replay. It captures interaction information such as clicks, scrolling, mouse movement, page visibility, and the page and layout information used to reconstruct sessions. Sensitive content is masked, and text entered into input fields is masked by Clarity. We use Clarity for site usability and product improvement, not advertising or personalization. Geo-Aware Consent & Opt-In Behavior
So that visitors in opt-in regions get a consent banner and everyone else does not, CodexUsage checks the visitor's country at request time using our hosting platform (Vercel):
- Opt-in regions: For visitors from the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity are completely blocked by default. A consent banner is presented, and no Google Analytics or Microsoft Clarity script is loaded, no request is sent to either service, and no Google Analytics or Clarity cookies are set unless the visitor affirmatively clicks “Allow analytics”.
- Other regions: For visitors outside those specified regions, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity may load normally without an upfront banner. However, the same preference control is always available in the site footer and on this page.
- Google Basic Consent Mode: Advertising storage (
ad_storage), ad user data (ad_user_data), and ad personalization (ad_personalization) are permanently set todenied. We do not use Google Ads, remarketing, Google Signals, advertising personalization, enhanced conversions, or user tracking IDs. - Country-level only: Geolocation is evaluated solely at the coarse country level at request time. Codex Usage does not store IP addresses, precise location coordinates, city, latitude, or longitude.
Categories of Information Measured by Google Analytics
Where Google Analytics is loaded (after opt-in or in non-opt-in regions), it may collect and measure:
- Page visits: Visited URLs, page titles, and navigation path across documentation topics.
- Device and browser characteristics: Operating system, browser type, device category, screen resolution, and language settings.
- Approximate geography: Coarse country- or region-level origin derived from the IP address during connection.
- Traffic source: Referring website, search engine, or direct URL entry.
- Engagement: Time spent on page, scroll depth, and interaction duration.
- Product interaction events: Explicit measurement events tied to key actions on CodexUsage.dev:

Information Processed by Microsoft Clarity
Where Microsoft Clarity is loaded, it processes interaction data (clicks, scrolling, mouse movement, page visibility), device and browser characteristics, approximate location, referrer, and page and layout information used to build heatmaps and session replays. Sensitive content is masked, and text entered into input fields is masked. Replays are reconstructions of page activity, not video recordings.
Third-Party Data Use by Google and Microsoft
Google Analytics is provided by Google LLC. When Google Analytics is active, data generated about your use of this site is transmitted to and stored by Google on servers that may be located in the United States or other countries.

Microsoft Clarity is provided by Microsoft. When Clarity is active, the interaction and device data described above is transmitted to and stored by Microsoft on servers that may be located in the United States or other countries.
Changing Your Analytics Choice
You can change your saved choice at any time:
- Click the Analytics Preferences link in the footer of any page, or click the button below.
- The analytics card will appear, showing your current preference.
- Select “Allow analytics” to enable both optional Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, or “No thanks” to disable both. When declined, their analytics cookies are cleared, Google Analytics is blocked from sending further hits, and the page reloads if needed so Microsoft Clarity stops collecting.
